Karim Benzema (Arabic: كريم بن زيما, pronounced /bɛnˈzeɪmə/) is a French footballer who currently plays as a striker for the Spanish club Real Madrid and the French national team.
Benzema came through the youth academy at Lyon and has been capped at senior level for France. He played in UEFA Euro 2008 and was the top goalscorer in Ligue 1 for the 200708 season, just three seasons after making his professional debut. This was also his breakthrough season which saw him earn many awards and a new contract which resulted in him becoming one of the highest-paid footballers in France.

The transfer fee was priced at €35 million with the fee rising to as much as €41 million based on incentives. On 1 July 2009, it was announced that Lyon had reached an agreement with Spanish club Real Madrid for the transfer of Benzema. Benzema made his Real Madrid debut on 20 July in the club's opening pre-season friendly against Irish club Shamrock Rovers in Dublin, appearing as a halftime substitute.[48] He scored the lone goal in the club's 10 win, scoring in the 87th minute.[49] On 24 August, Benzema netted two goals in Real Madrid's 40 victory over Norwegian club Rosenborg in an annual friendly tournament organized for the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy. The goals brought his total tally in the preseason with Real Madrid to five, making him the joint top scorer alongside fellow striker Raúl.[50]
He made his La Liga debut on 29 August against Deportivo de La Coruña.[51] Benzema scored his first official goal for Madrid on 20 September 2009 at home against newly promoted side Xerez.[52]

Early career
Benzema is a graduate of the Olympique Lyonnais Academy. Before joining Lyon, he trained at local Rhône-Alpes club Bron Terraillon SC in the commune Bron, a suburb of Lyon. His performances with Bron's youth team caught the attention of Lyon scouts and he joined the academy in 1996 at the age of 9.[7] Benzema quickly ascended up the ranks scoring 38 goals in one season with Lyon's under-16 team[8] and scoring 12 goals in 14 matches with the under-18 team before earning a call up to the senior squad by manager Paul Le Guen.
He made his league debut for Lyon on 15 January 2005 during the 200405 season in a match against FC Metz, coming on as a substitute in the 77th minute. Lyon won the match 20 with Benzema providing the assist on the second goal scored by Bryan Bergougnoux.[9] Five days later, he signed his first professional contract, agreeing to a three-year deal.[10] Over the next two seasons, his play was limited making a total of 34 appearances and scoring six goals, including his first ever against AC Ajaccio in a 31 win,[11] as well as his first UEFA Champions League goal against Norwegian club Rosenborg BK in a 21 victory.[12]

EU sees intense divisions on euro voting rights: EUX.TV report
The October 2010 summit of European Union leaders on Friday almost took the union a big step closer to creating a mechanism that could invoke voting rights for member states that do not stick to rules governing the euro as a single currency. But although European Council President Herman van Rompuy insists he has a mandate, especially from France and Germany, to table a proposal to that effect, other EU leaders said that a suspension of voting rights for an individual member state is simply not going to fly. A Franco-German proposal to sanction eurozone budget sinners by stripping them of their EU voting rights faces massive opposition from other countries in the bloc, it emerged after a two-day summit in Brussels on Friday (29 October).

EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy avoided giving a direct answer when asked by EurActiv after the summit to comment on the divisive voting rights issue, which has been vigorously pushed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
But European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, who was standing beside him, set the record straight, stating that the mandate given to Van Rompuy excluded "any kind of suspension of voting rights in this revision of the Treaty".
Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, meanwhile, said opposition to the Franco-German proposal had been "fierce [...] very fierce" during the two-day meeting.
"This idea, which was Franco-German, to strip voting rights from countries which consistently breach the [Stability and Growth] Pact has not been endorsed by the European Council," Juncker said, in response to a question from EurActiv.
He explained that Van Rompuy had been tasked with investigating whether budget sinners should be stripped of their voting rights on issues restricted to the European Monetary Union (EMU), meaning that their prerogatives in other areas would remain unaffected.
"Now Mr. Van Rompuy will ponder the limited issue of removing the right to vote on EMU-related issues," Juncker said, speaking in French.
The long-serving prime minister of Luxembourg, known for his outstanding expertise in EU monetary and financial affairs, expressed hope that the voting rights penalty would never be adopted.
France, Germany refuse to admit defeat
Speaking to the press in another meeting room, French President Nicolas Sarkozy presented a different interpretation of the voting rights issue.
"Herman Van Rompuy will examine this question, which is of particular importance [...] even if thorough preparatory work is needed," he said.
At a press conference in an adjacent room, Merkel said the voting rights were "still on the agenda". "The subject of voting rights, which we are not taking off the agenda, remain on the agenda," she said.
The chancellor added, however, that those changes would come as part of future treaty change.
Avoiding referendum threat
Juncker explained that the treaty would be changed in a "slight" way, which would not require ratification in some member countries. As the summit conclusions specify, the 'no bailout' Article 125 of the Lisbon Treaty will not be modified.
Instead, the mechanism will rely on Article 122, which allows for helping EU countries at times of "severe difficulties" like natural disasters or an energy emergency.
Because in such cases there would be no transfer of competence, there is no need to call referenda in those countries "which are fond of such exercises".

Former Real president Florentino Perez, who is expected to announce tomorrow that he will stand in elections to head the club again, has already discussed the payment of the amount with Ronaldos agent Jorge Mendes, it added.
But Perez may ultimately decide instead to recruit AC Milans Brazilian playmaker Kaka as he is less expensive and this would allow him to recruit more players, the newspaper added.
Last month Ronaldo, who is under contract with United until 2012, said he was happy at Manchester when asked about persistent reports linking him with a move to Real.
Kaka, the 2007 FIFA World Footballer of the Year, has also said recently that he wants to stay at AC Milan.
Perez was president of Real between 2000 and 2006 when the team recruited top players like Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane and David Beckham.
Real are slated to hold elections for president in June and Perez tops polls of the clubs preferences even though he has not yet said he will run. — AFP

Spain produced a superb display to cruise past Russia and set up a Euro 2008 final against Germany on Sunday.
Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas was the driving force behind the win after coming on as substitute for injured David Villa.
Xavi turned home Andres Iniesta's cross after 50 minutes and substitute Daniel Guiza converted a superb pass from Fabregas with 17 minutes left.
Fabregas played in David Silva for a simple third after 82 minutes as a disappointing Russia ended well beaten.
The only cloud on Spain's horizon was the first-half injury to Villa, who will now miss the final clash with Germany in Vienna.
Russia never threatened to produce the attacking firepower that saw them dump out Holland in the last eight, and playmaker Andrei Arshavin was an anonymous figure throughout.
Arshavin entered the game with a huge weight of expectation on his shoulders, as well as transfer interest from Barcelona, but failed to deliver.
Spain were outstanding as they inflicted another heavy defeat on Guus Hiddink's side, as they had done in the group stages and were rarely under pressure.
Veteran coach Luis Aragones now looks to have put together a side capable of ending the years of under-achievement, even making light of that injury to the influential Villa.
Spain made a positive start, with the partnership of Villa and Torres demonstrating their threat early on.
Villa slipped in Torres for a shot that was saved by Igor Akinfeev, then forced the Russia keeper into a smart save down at his post with a long-range drive.
Russia's only early effort was a free-kick from Roman Pavlyuchenko that was off target as Spain dominated territory and possession.
Villa fired in another free-kick that was saved by Akinfeev after 28 minutes, but appeared to injure himself and limped off shortly afterwards, to be replaced by Fabregas.
It was a pivotal moment, with Fabregas more than compensating for the departure of Villa by delivered a midfield master-class.
Spain took a fully-deserved lead after 50 minutes when Xavi arrived to perfection to slide home Iniesta's driven cross.
Fabregas was pulling the strings, first setting up Torres for a shot that the Liverpool striker curled off target.
Torres then slid another glorious chance wide after a fine run and cross from Sergio Ramos in what was his final contribution of a tireless performance.
He was replaced by Guiza, with Liverpool team-mate Xabi Alonso coming on for goalscorer Xavi.
And Guiza showed his prowess as a finisher when he scored Spain's second after 73 minutes, lifting Fabregas's superb pass over Akinfeev.
Fabregas was running the game, and he produced another piece of superb creation to set up Silva for a precise finish with eight minutes left.
Spain keeper Iker Casillas was finally forced into action with three minutes remaining, saving superbly from Dmitry Sychev's header.

Nevland naar Fulham voor 2,5 miljoen euro
GRONINGEN - Erik Nevland is voor 2,5 miljoen euro verkocht aan de Engelse voetbalclub Fulham. FC Groningen krijgt nog eens 500.000 euro als Fulham zich dit seizoen weet te handhaven in de Premier League. Eerder werd al bekend dat middenvelder Rasmus Lindgren per direct vertrekt naar Ajax.
FC Groningen en Fulham bereikten zondagavond laat een akkoord. Nevland is maandag naar Londen gevlogen voor een medische keuring. Afgelopen vrijdag ketste de transfer af, omdat Fulham toen niet verder wilde gaan dan een bod van 1,5 miljoen euro en dat vond FC Groningen te weinig. Zondagavond hebben beide clubs opnieuw met elkaar gesproken en toen werd er dus wel overeenstemming bereikt.
Nevland liet al eerder weten de overgang naar Fulham als de kans van zijn leven te zien. De Noorse spits leverde zondagmiddag voor de uitwedstrijd van FC Groningen tegen Feyenoord zijn aanvoerdersband in. Op die manier wilde hij uiting geven aan zijn teleurstelling over de afgeketste transfer. Nevland wist toen nog niet dat beide partijen diezelfde dag weer om tafel zouden gaan.
Lindgren
Rasmus Lindgren had nog tot 2010 een contract bij FC Groningen, maar kon voor een gelimiteerd transferbedrag van 2,5 miljoen euro naar Amsterdam. Lindgren maakte begin 2005 de omgekeerde weg en speelde 82 officiële wedstrijden voor FC Groningen, waarin hij vier keer scoorde.

De Braziliaan Pierre Veiga Sodre van Sport Club Internacional uit Porto Alegre is één van de kandidaten om Lindgren op te volgen. Sodre is deze week op proef in Groningen. De technische leiding van FC Groningen is overtuigd van de kwaliteiten van de 20-jarige Sodre, maar er zijn meedere kandidaten om Lindgren op te volgen. Zo heeft Groningen serieuze belangstelling voor Theo Jansen van Vitesse. Sodre speelde in 2006 met Club Internacional op Eurovoetbal. De Brazilianen wonnen toen het toernooi.

Moubarak 'Mbark' Boussoufa (born August 15, 1984 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch-born Moroccan football player for R.S.C. Anderlecht.
Mbark started off at the youth academy of Ajax Amsterdam before joining Chelsea F.C. He spent the 2005/06 season with K.A.A. Gent, winning several prizes in 2006: Belgian Footballer of the Year, Belgian Young Footballer of the Year and Belgian Ebony Shoe. He is only the second player from a North African country to win the Ebony Shoe, after Ahmed Hossam.
Boussoufa had the choice of playing with the Dutch national team, but chose Morocco and played his first match for the Moroccan national team against USA on 23 May 2006.
In June, 2006, Boussoufa signed a 4-year contract with R.S.C. Anderlecht for €3.5 million Euro transfer. In April 2008, Boussoufa was heavily linked with a move to Newcastle United as a replacement for Turkish playmaker Emre Belözoğlu. Atletico Madrid and RC Lens amongst other teams in England were also credited with an interest in Boussoufa. Newcastle have apparently made a £3m bid for the player's services and Boussoufa has said he would be very interested in a move to the club and have another chance in the Premier League after his time as a Chelsea youth player a few years ago.
